Honest Work is a concept album that deals with modern labor and all its complicated entanglements in a globalized world: exploitation, the climate crisis, isolation, greed, and the pressure to perform—yet it never feels overly intellectual. Quite the opposite. Odd Beholder has preserved a sense of the permeable and the imaginary, which she weaves into paper-thin sheets of sound with the help of Berlin techno producer Douglas Greed. Weinmann’s clear voice catches in these sonic fabrics, compelling you to listen closely as she sings. And when a pop-infused guitar sparkles toward the horizon, as it does in "Drive," dreamlike landscapes drift by.
